Gold Coaster Mick Fanning watched from the beach as Brazilian Adriano De Souza took out the World Title at the Pipeline Masters event in Hawaii.
Fanning lost his semi-final against Gabriel Medina after the young Brazilian pulled off a hail-mary air trick in the final moments to clinch the lead and the win.
De Souza needed to win his semi in order to take the World Title and made easy work of local Hawaiian talent Mason Ho.

Fanning was burdened with the knowledge his brother, Peter, had passed away before he paddled out for his third round heat.
