Fanning’s bravery recognised at Australian sports’ biggest night

Gold Coast surfer Mick Fanning’s incredible bravery has been officially recognised at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame ceremony in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

Mick Fanning and fellow Queenslander surfer, Julian Wilson have been awarded the Spirit of Sport award following a shark attack in South Africa.

The award, given at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame ceremony in Melbourne on Wednesday night recognised the brave and selfless conduct of both men.

The two surfing stars were competing in the final of the world tour event at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa three months ago when a shark attacked Fanning.

He punched the shark as it knocked him off his board and Wilson paddled over to see if he could help.

Fanning and Wilson are in Portugal for the next tour event and so their mothers, Elizabeth Osborne and Nola Wilson accepted the awards on their behalf.

The pair were also nominated for The Don award, which goes to the inspiring Australian sporting performance of the past 12 months, they were edged out by Gold Coast golfer Jason Day.
