Father loses eye after hospital failed to detect cancer

A Gold Coast father of three has lost his eye after doctors missing a cancerous tumour during an MRI.

It’s understood Lance McDonald went to have his eye checked in July of 2013 and it wasn’t until June this year that the problem was finally discovered.

When doctors scanned his eye again, the cancer was too large to remove so he had to have his eye removed.

Mr McDonald is now suing Gold Coast Health.

It comes just months after health bosses ordered a review into 48,000 x-rays that were not looked at properly.

Gold Coast Health says every patient with a plain x-ray in that group will now be reported on.

“We are accelerating the process for reviewing the reports, with completion due by early December when we will report on the number of patients affected by this issues and any related concerns,” a statement read.
