A FATHER has drowned while trying to rescue his two children from rough seas at a beach southwest of Melbourne.
The heartbreaking scenes unfolded at Skenes Creek shortly before 1.30pm on Thursday afternoon.
Police said the 41-year-old Sydenham man was trying to rescue his two sons, aged 8 and 12, when tragedy struck.

A family member raced to the man’s aid when he started to struggle, police said, but it was too late.
Despite the best efforts of family members to save the man, he could not be revived and died at the scene.
The man’s two children were rescued and brought to shore safely, police said.
They were taken to Geelong University Public Hospital in a stable condition for assessment.
Police will now prepare a report for the Coroner.
