Fears for swimmer swept away in a rip

An air and sea search has resumed for a swimmer who was swept out to sea on the NSW mid-north coast.

The 22-year-old became caught in a rip while swimming with a group of friends at Nambucca beach around 5.45pm on Saturday.

Police and emergency services were called to the beach, on Regatta Drive, but were unable to reach the man.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was brought in and Surf Lifesavers helped in the search for the man, but there was no sign of him before darkness fell.

There are now “serious concerns” for the man, with powerful surf conditions continuing overnight.

The hazardous surf is still pounding the NSW and Queensland coasts, forcing the closure of many beaches and warning for people to stay out of the water.
