Federal government brings forward $1B in defence spending to boost jobs

The federal government is committing more funding to the Australian Defence Force, as part of its effort to boost jobs during the coronavirus crisis.

$1 billion will be spent to recruit more reservists and to upgrade military bases around the country.

It’s understood another 500 people will be able to be enlisted thanks to the funding.

But it’s hoped to support around 4,000 jobs in total.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison made the announcement this morning, saying the money will do well to boost jobs for Australians.

“Key areas we are doing that is ensuring that how we’re spending money in the defence industry, how we’re procuring, how we’re managing our defence estate, how we’re providing enterprise grants to support the development of new technology – that will keep people in jobs,” Mr Morrison said.
