Female passenger killed after car slams into tree in NSW

A WOMAN has died after the car she was a passenger in crashed into a tree near Griffith early this morning.

Police said that around 3.40am, a Holden Commodore was travelling east along the Sturt Highway when the car veered from the road and collided with a tree.

A 56-year-old woman travelling in the front passenger seat died at the scene.

The driver, a 50-year-old man, was taken to Griffith Base Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

He was treated for a chest injury and remains in a stable condition.

Police say investigations into the crash are continuing.
