Female prison officer charged over relationship with male inmate

A CORRECTIVES services officer has been charged after allegedly pursuing a relationship with an inmate at a prison in Central West New South Wales.

The woman, 24, is accused of becoming involved with a 28-year-old male inmate at the Wellington Correctional Centre.

Officers attached to the State Crime Command’s Corrective Services Investigation Unit formed Strike Force Balanada to investigate allegations the pair were in a relationship.

Following inquiries, the 24-year-old woman attended Wellington Police Station on Friday where she was quizzed by strike force detectives.

The young officer has since been charged with causing a safety risk by engaging in a relationship with an inmate and has been suspended from duty at the prison.

She was granted conditional bail and ordered to appear in Wellington Local Court on May 21.
