Female worker killed by cane train in north Qld

A WOMAN has been killed after being struck by a cane train in Mackay’s Pioneer Valley.

The 62-year-old woman is understood to have been undertaking work as a locomotive assistant at the end of the train when she was crushed between two cane bins around 10.45am.

The woman died at the scene.


Mackay Sugar has released a statement confirming the tragic death.

“It is with deep sadness that we advise that a fatality has occurred when a Mackay Sugar employee was working at a siding of the rail network near Mirani,” the statement reads.

“Mackay Sugar expresses our sincere condolences and sympathies to the family of the deceased employee and are providing support to her family and co-workers.

“Emergency services personnel, police and Workplace Health and Safety representatives have attended the scene and investigations into the incident are continuing.”
