Festive season kicks off with cops injured on the Gold Coast glitter strip

IT’S been a wild start to the festive holidays on the Gold Coast, with two police officers injured in separate incidents on the glitter strip.

In the first incident, police were called to Orchid Avenue about 1.45am on Friday where a male constable was allegedly punched in the face and rendered unconscious.

It’s understood he’d rushed in to break up a street brawl between two groups of men when he was struck by a drunk 22-year-old Western Australian man.

The 22-year-old was apprehended at the scene and faced court on Friday charged with serious assault of a police officer, public nuisance and obstruct police.

The court was told the young man had come to the Gold Coast for his grandfather’s 80th birthday.

He was bailed on the condition he provided a $5000 surety, kept at least 20 metres away from any licensed Gold Coast venue and returned to Western Australia.

In a separate incident shortly after 3am, an officer received lacerations to his forearm while trying to arrest a 21-year-old Victorian man allegedly involved in an assault in the Hilton Arcade.
