Fifita in doubt for Kangaroos squad named today

Cronulla’s Andrew Fifita could be overlooked when the Kangaroos squad is announced today – as the NRL is still pondering over whether or not to punish the controversial prop.

The governing body has spent the last six weeks deciding whether or not to penalise the Sharks star for supporting one-punch killer Kieran Loveridge on his arm strapping, throughout most of the 2016 season.

Previously, Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga admitted he wasn’t sure that Fifita would be available for selection, while Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan is worried about his welfare without support.

“Andrew’s pretty resilient when he gets into this group, the football group. They look after him,” he said.

“But it must be hard for him when he’s away from us, without the support of the playing group. We need to look after him because there are some issues there. The media does affect him.

“He’s a tough, resilient kid. He’s made some bad decisions but he knows that.”

Originally due to be released yesterday, the Australian Rugby League will announce the Four Nations squad at 10am AEDT today.

While Meninga has previously voiced doubts over Gold Coast’s Jarryd Hayne for selection, he has also praised the performance of Rookie of the Year Ash Taylor.
