Fire bug charged with trying to light bushfires near Lake Macquarie

A MAN has spent the night behind bars after he was allegedly caught trying to start a bushfire near Lake Macquarie yesterday afternoon.

Police say local residents allegedly caught the man lighting two small blazes in bushland off the Pacific Highway at Jewells about 4.50pm.

Residents were able to prevent the fires from spreading while the 61-year-old man was arrested and taken to Charlestown Police Station where he was charged with two counts of intentionally causing a fire.

He has been refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court today.
