Body found inside Tweed Heads unit after fire

UPDATE: FIRE crews have tragically discovered a body following a fire at a unit in Tweed Heads today.

Police said emergency crews rushed to a complex on Flamingo place around 9.15am after receiving reports the building was well alight.

It’s understood the blaze erupted in a bedroom of the home.

Fire & Rescue NSW managed to extinguish the flames; however, the unit was destroyed.

Following a search of the home, officers found the body of a man, believed to be aged in his 60s.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, however police say initial inquiries suggest it is not suspicious.

EARLIER: FIRE crews have this morning battled a ferocious fire at a unit in Tweed Heads.

Fire and Rescue NSW said crews were called to a complex on Flamingo place around 9.00am.

It’s understood the blaze erupted in a bedroom of the home, and that the flames were put out within an hour.

A number of people are believed to have escaped the fire, however there are fears one person may have been trapped inside.

It’s not yet known what sparked the blaze.
