Research from the RACQ has found 85 per cent of us don’t regularly inspect our electric or oil heaters – putting homes and lives at risk of fire.
RACQ spokesperson Kirsty Clinton described the research as “very concerning”.
“Most people surveyed said they only checked their heaters if they noticed a problem with them,” Ms Clinton said.

“Often heaters haven’t been used since last winter. You can never be sure an appliance hasn’t suffered any damage while in storage unless you check it out.”
Ms Clinton added that the research also found that while 7-out-of-10 people surveyed had smoke alarms installed, 1-in-10 had failed to test the alarm in over a year.
“We don’t ever want to hear of home fire fatalities from something so simple as not having and maintaining a smoke alarm,” she said.
