Fires still burn on Stradbroke Island

FIRE FIGHTERS continue to monitor and dampen down hotspots at a large bushfire burning in inaccessible country near Yarraman Mine in the area of Brown Lake on North Stradbroke Island.

Crews are also strengthening containment lines and monitoring a fire near Native Companion Lagoon.

Both of these fires are burning within containment lines and aerial water-bombing will continue on both blazes to keep them under control.

These fires are not threatening any properties, but they are causing a large smoke haze towards the southern bay islands.

Residents are advised to keep their doors and windows closed, and if they suffer from respiratory conditions, to keep medication close by.

Motorists in the area are advised to drive with caution and check with the Local Council and Queensland Police Service (QPS) as there is restricted access to some roads and campgrounds on the island.
