A father-son fishing trip has turned to tragedy after their boat capsized off Bailey Island overnight.
The pair, aged 40 and 73, were out fishing about 5.45pm yesterday when their 4.5 metre vessel capsized 25 nautical miles east of Mackay Harbour.
The 40-year-old man managed to retrieve the EPIRB from the upturned boat and activate it while treading water and helping his father stay afloat.

The CQ Rescue helicopter responded and was able to locate the vessel and the two men, however the 73-year-old man died at the scene.
The 40-year-old was winched to safety and transported to Mackay Hospital for further treatment.
Police with the assistance of Volunteer Marine Rescue later returned to the vessel to recover the deceased man.
Investigations are continuing.
