Fitzgibbons beats Gilmore at Cloudbreak

SALLY Fitzgibbons has moved into second in the world surfing rankings following a second consecutive tour victory.

The Wollongong product claimed victory at the Fiji Pro yesterday, narrowly beating Tweed Heads hero Stephanie Gilmore (9.00 to 8.73) at the Cloudbreak reef.

“Winning at Cloudbreak is such an awesome feeling,” she said.

“You get smashed across the reef but you just have to pick yourself up and get going again.”

The ABC reports, the win follows Fitzgibbon’s last-stop victory in Brazil and has her breathing down the neck of world number one and defending world champion Carissa Moore of Hawaii.

The women’s next stop on the world championship tour will be the US Open from July 27 while the men’s Fiji Pro is due to begin on Sunday.
