Five critically injured in explosion at central Qld coal mine

Emergency crews are currently on the scene of a serious workplace incident in central Queensland this afternoon.

Paramedics were called to the Grosvenor coal mine at Moranbah, South-West of Mackay, just after 3.00pm following reports multiple people had been injured in an underground explosion.

Upon arrival, they found five people suffering significant burns to their upper bodies and airways.

They were treated at the scene before being rushed to Moranbah hospital in a critical condition.

At least four aircraft are currently en-route, with the patients expected to be flown to the burns unit in Brisbane.

All other workers have been evacuated from the site and have since been accounted for.
