Two rescue helicopters were dispatched to the scene and landed in a paddock next to the road. They were used to airlifted the drivers to hospital once they were cut out of the wreckage.

A female driver was airlifted to the Liverpool Hospital, while the male driver of the second vehicle was flown to Westmead.

The road remains closed in both directions, with wreckage strewn across both lanes.

Police are urging motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
