The couple was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital where they remained this morning in critical condition.
Three teenagers believed to be aged between 14 and 17 from the other car, a Mazda 6, sustained less serious injuries.
It’s understood the 17-year-old boy behind the wheel was overtaking another vehicle at speed when he smashed into the couple’s oncoming car.
The husband and wife were just minutes from home when the collision occurred.
Toohey Road was closed overnight as Forensic Crash Unit investigators examined the scene.
Anyone who witnessed the smash or has relevant dash cam footage is urged to come forward and contact police.
