Former Gold Coast horse trainer sentenced to 23-years jail for smuggling cocaine

A former horse trainer, who was on his way back to the Gold Coast when sprung with $20-million worth of drugs on his yacht in Fiji, has been sentenced.

John Nikolic will spend at least 18 years behind bars, after being handed a 23 year sentence with a non-parole period of 18 years.

Mr Nikolic and his wife Yvette were arrested in June 2018, after their luxury vessel Shenanigans arrived in Port Denara.

They had visited Colombia and were stopping off on their way to the Gold Coast, when Fijian authorities became suspicious.

They searched the vessel, discovering 10 packs of cocaine, along with two guns.

Mr Nikolic claimed sole responsibility during the raid and even showed officers where the cocaine was hidden.

Following a trial at the High Court in Suva last week, he was found guilty of drug importation, possession, and failure to declare arms and ammunitions to a customs officer .

Ms Nikolic was acquitted on all charges in February and has returned home.
