POLICE have charged a former priest over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage boy more than 40 years ago in far north New South Wales.
The now 85-year-old man was arrested in Newcastle yesterday, following a near seven-month police operation.
In August last year, detectives from the Richmond Police District received a complaint about the abuse of a schoolboy in 1978.

It’s alleged the then 13-year-old was befriended by the priest during high school scripture class and piano lessons; and was later assaulted on the far North Coast.
The former Anglican clergyman was charged with buggery and issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice.
The man is expected to face the Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 2 May.
