Five injured, one permanently disfigured, in London acid attacks

UPDATE 2:20PM AEST | FIVE people have now been injured, one of them permanently disfigured, following a series of acid attacks in London, it has been confirmed.

Two men on a moped allegedly embarked on a rampage through the streets of Hackney, Stoke Newington and Islington in the city’s east and sprayed corrosive acid in the faces of random people on Thursday night.

The barbaric attacks allegedly happened all within 90 minutes of each other.

Metropolitan Police have confirmed all five victims have been taken to hospital with extensive facial injuries.

It’s understood the first victim, believed to be a 32-year-old man, was riding a moped when another moped with two male riders pulled up next to him in Hackney around 10:25pm local time (BST).

The riders allegedly threw acid in the victim’s face before stealing his moped and fleeing the scene.

The second incident occurred at 11:05pm, the third at 11:18pm, fourth around 11:37pm and fifth at 11:49pm.

It’s understood the third victim was doused in acid during a robbery at Stoke Newington and sustained life-changing injuries, while the fourth was targeted while he too was riding a moped.

The fifth victim was targeted at Islington.

Scotland Yard is investigating and says it believes all five incidents are linked.

Metropolitan Police released a statement a short time ago, confirming a teenage male is in police custody.

“A male, in his teens has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and robbery. He is currently in custody at an east London police station,” Met. Police said in a statement.
