French Open: Stosur into third round, Williams out

SAM STOSUR continues to fly the flag at the French Open, with the Gold Coast tennis player into the third round at Roland Garros.

The No.19 seed cruised to victory last night over Austrian world No.38 Yvonne Meusburger 6-1, 6-3.

Fox Sports reports, Stosur looked in fine touch from the outset against Meusburger, using her damaging forehand to great effect as she raced to a 4-0 lead and wrapped up the first set in half an hour.

A minor hiccup in the final game, when she blew two match points and had to fight off a break point, was the only blemish.

“I’m feeling good out on the court, feel very comfortable, feel like I’m playing the way that I should play, can play,” Stosur said.

In a major boost to Stosur’s chances heading towards the finals, Grand Slam heavyweight Serena Williams has been knocked out.

The American world No.1 lost 6-2, 6-2 to 35th-ranked Garbine Muguruza of Spain, opening up Stosur’s section of the draw.

Stosur now faces Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova, over whom she holds a 4-0 win-loss record, most recently winning their meeting in Madrid earlier this month.
