Beaches closed, roads flooded as heavy rain lashes the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast has copped a drenching overnight as slow-moving showers and thunderstorms moved across the city.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the northern Gold Coast just before 2.00am, however that has now been cancelled.

The weather bureau warned “an area of coastal convergence is developing on the Gold Coast with localised semi-stationary showers and thunderstorms continuing this morning.”

Hope Island, South Stradbroke Island and Jacobs Well were in the firing line, with residents being told to brace for heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.

Other parts of the city also copped the wild weather, with Carrara recording 129mm of rain in just three hours until 12.45am Sunday morning.

Coolangatta also recorded 78mm, while Tallebudgera took in 87mm, with another 120mm of rain forecast to fall across the Gold Coast today.

The intense showers caused flash flooding in a number of areas, with emergency crews having to perform a number of swift water rescues in Helensvale, Nerang, Robina, Currumbin Waters and Tallebudgera.

It’s prompted authorities to issue a warning for motorists to stay off the roads today if they can.

A hazardous surf warning also remains in place, with City of Gold Coast confirming most beaches across the Gold Coast today are closed.

“City lifeguards and SLSQ lifesavers will continue to monitor conditions closely today and assess beach closures as needed,” a spokesperson told myGC.

“Gold Coasters are asked to heed the advice of lifeguards and lifesavers at all times.”

Large and powerful surf conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, swimming and surfing.

How are Mayor Tate’s open air ‘pop up’ beach bars going? And what about his ‘Love Boat’ cruise ships docking 1 mile out in the open ocean on a narrow jetty? No Costa Corona accidents at sea? Mother Nature has spoken but will the Mayor listen? Unlikely, if history teaches us anything about this man.
