Gas leak sparks emergency declaration in Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise has reopened after a gas leak in the area forced police to declare an emergency situation overnight.

The declaration was made just before 10.30pm after a gas leak was detected earlier in the afternoon.

Trams were also halted as a result.

The affected area included View Avenue, the Esplanade, Surfers Paradise Boulevard and up to Cypress Avenue.

After containing the leak, police revoked the declaration at 2.40am.

The area has since re-opened, with police thanking the public for their patience whilst the incident was dealt with.
