Psychologist charged with child sex offences given bail

UPDATE at 2:20 PM | A GOLD Coast man and former Scoutmaster charged with almost a dozen historical child sex offences has been granted bail.

Dr Robert Montgomery, 75, was arrested at his Gold Coast clinic in Southport on Tuesday.

The esteemed Gold Coast psychologist was extradited to New South Wales where he was formally charged this morning with nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of buggery.

It’s alleged the now 75-year-old man sexually abused three 12-year-old boy scouts in Sydney 55 years ago, during his time as a Scoutmaster in the 1960s.

Dr Montgomery appeared in Byron Bay Local Court via videolink from Tweed Heads Police Station this afternoon where he was granted strict conditional bail.

Earlier, Defence lawyer Colin Greatorix told the ABC his client was “quite depressed” and “in an uncomfortable state” after the allegations were levelled against him.

FIRST at 5:00 AM (by ) | A GOLD Coast man has been arrested and extradited to New South Wales over allegations he sexually assaulted a number of young boys back in the 1960’s.

The 75-year-old, who was once a Scoutmaster, was arrested at medical practice in Southport on Tuesday.

There are reports he worked at the practice as a psychologist and has previously treated contestants on a reality TV show and profiled notorious criminals.

The arrest comes after three men came forward with allegations last year that the man sexually abused them in the Bellevue Hill, Marrickville, and Waterfall areas when they were just 12-years-old.

The man was allegedly a Scoutmaster at Edgecliff and Marrickville during this time, and the boys were all members.

Investigators applied for and were granted the man’s extradition at Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The man was escorted by police to Tweed Heads Police Station where an arrest warrant was executed.

He was charged with indecent assault on male (x9) and buggery (x2).

He was refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on Thursday.
