Man charged over bomb hoax at Helensvale

UPDATE @ 2.00pm: A man has been charged after he forced the evacuation of Helensvale Train Station this morning.

Just before 7.00am, police were called to the train station after receiving reports of a man acting suspiciously and erratically on the train.

Police detained the man on the platform and declared an emergent situation when he allegedly claimed he had a bomb.

Specialist police were called in to investigate and an hour later officers deemed the area safe.

The 41-year-old Clayfield man has been charged with one count of bomb hoax.

He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.

EARLIER @ 8.45am: Gold Coast line trains have resumed in both directions after coming to a halt following an earlier police incident at Helensvale.

Police declared an emergency situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act at Helensvale train station just before 7.30am after a man was seen acting erratically and making bomb threats.

The train station was evacuated with the bomb squad called in to investigate.

Just after 8.15am, police revoked the emergency declaration after deeming the area safe.

A man has since been taken into custody.

Train passengers can expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

EARLIER @ 8.15am:  Police have declared an emergency situation in Helensvale this morning.

The declaration comes after officers were called to Helensvale Railway station around 7.00am after a man was seen acting erratically and making bomb threats.

Helensvale train station has been evacuated and all Gold Coast trains have been suspended in both directions between Varsity Lakes and Coomera stations.

The man making threats has since been taken into custody, however specialist police remain on scene and a public safety emergency has been declared.

It covers the area within the Town Centre Drive, North to the entrance of the Helensvale Train Station and south of the entrance to the Railway Station, Town Centre Drive.

Police have urged members of the public to avoid the area if possible.

Translink has advised delays of up to 60 minutes are likely with buses being arranged to transport customers.

Police confirmed officers were called to the scene around 7.00am after a man was seen acting erratically and making threats.

He has since been taken into custody.

All Gold Coast train lines have since been suspended in both directions.

“At the request of police, Gold Coast line trains are suspended in both directions between Varsity Lakes and Beenleigh stations,” a statement by Translink reads.

Passengers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes. In the meantime, alternative buses are being arranged to transport customers.
