Tweed Heads local Stephanie Gilmore has survived her round 2 elimination heat at the US Open of Surfing to join a raft of Aussies in round 3 at Huntington Beach in California.
Gilmore was in the water for the opening heat of the day against fellow Australian Nikki Van Dijk.
Van Dijk was first off the mark, with her two highest waves recording in her opening three waves, to see her grab the lead with two wave total of 11.00.

Gilmore on the other hand took a while to find good form, failing to find a score to match Van Dijk’s in her first five waves.
But her final two waves, a 5.77 and a 7.67 were enough to seal the deal and send her through to round 3.
Sally Fitzgibbons also survived her round 2 heat against Alessa Quizon, grabbing the highest wave score of the round – an 8.17.
Ratings leader Courtney Conlogue and three-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore also got through.
Australia’s Keely Andrew and Laura Enever also got through to round 3.
