A 14-YEAR-OLD schoolgirl has tragically died after being run over by a truck in a shocking hit and run in Melbourne’s east this morning.
The teen was crossing busy Whitehorse Road, at the intersection with Dampier Grove and Heatherdale Road, at Ringwood when she was struck just after 7am.
The 14-year-old was reportedly carrying a backpack and making her way to school at the time.

Victoria Police said the truck was travelling south along Dampier Grove and slammed into the girl as it turned left onto Whitehorse Road, also known as the Maroondah Highway.
The driver initially fled the scene, police said, leaving the 14-year-old with life-threatening injuries.
She was rushed to hospital but sadly her injuries were too severe and she could not be saved.
Victoria Police released a statement a short time ago, confirming the young girl died in hospital.
A 39-year-old man believed to be the driver of the truck handed himself into police a short time later.
The man from New South Wales is assisting the Major Collision Investigation Unit with their enquiries.

It’s rare to see Maroondah Hwy in Ringwood eerily quiet like this. Traffic’s restricted after a girl was struck by a truck as it turned from Heatherton Rd. The driver did not stop. Girl in critical condition in @RCHMelbourne. The roads gave just reopened. pic.twitter.com/kuMlO9lvkh
