Girl, 17, assaulted by predator while alone at the beach

POLICE are hunting a sex predator who allegedly preyed on a teenage girl at a beach in northern New South Wales.

The 17-year-old girl was allegedly indecently assaulted by a man at Pottsville Beach shortly after midday on Monday.

The young girl travelled to the beach on a bus from Kingscliff, police said.

As the teen walked north towards Hastings Point, police said she saw a ute parked near the entrance to the sand dunes.

The ute had black material covering the tray and a surfboard sticking out, police said.

The girl, who was alone on the beach at the time, changed into her swimming costume and went for a swim.

As she got out of the water, however, a man followed her as she walked back to collect her belongings.

Police said the man, who was wearing blue shorts, allegedly spoke to the girl before indecently assaulting her.

The girl called police who are investigating the incident and appealing for information to help find the man.

He is described as having an athletic build and tanned complexion with brown messy hair.

The man possibly had blue eyes and a distinctive tattoo of the sun on his right shoulder.

Anyone with information that could assist police with their investigation is urged to contact police.
