Gold Coast beaches reopen at 8am

Gold Coast beaches will re-open on Wednesday, ending a four day lay day.

The swell is finally starting to settle down after the wild weather hit last weekend combining a powerful north easterly swell with a king tide.

City of Gold Coast made an announcement on its website overnight, advising that all beaches would be open and patrolled from 8:00am.

The message also warned that swimmers need to stay close to shore in the flagged areas.

Lifeguards will check the conditions at different locations throughout the day and some beaches may be closed if conditions deteriorate in specific areas.

On Tuesday Chief Lifeguard Warren Young said he could see some seasoned surfers getting towed out into the large swell behind jet skis.  He said they were really getting good waves on the northern beaches.

He added that the less experienced board riders were doing the right thing and watching from the sidelines.
