Gold Coast claims top events location title

The Gold Coast has cemented its place as one of the world’s top event destinations securing the title of World Festival and Event City.

It follows a bumper year which has seen the Coast host GC2018 Commonwealth Games, Magic Millions Racing Carnival and the Roxy and Quiksilver Pro surf title.

Deputy Mayor Donna Gates said the events provide plenty of economic benefits to locals.

“The Commonwealth Games were proof the Coast has what it takes to be a world-class events city,” she said.

“We successfully staged the GC2018, the largest sporting event this decade in the southern hemisphere with more than $200 million invested into new and upgraded major venues.”

There’ll be more events staged this year with the World Parachuting Championships this month, and then both a International T20 Cricket Match and the Australian PGA Championship in November.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones says it’s no surprise the Gold Coast won the top award.

“With perfect weather all year round, a sophisticated transport system and a great new tourism infrastructure, the Gold Coast rightly has a reputation as a world-class events city,” she said.
