Gold Coast couple off to world poker match

A GOLD Coast couple are off to Las Vegas to play for a share of over $3 million at the World Series of Poker.

Timothy and Bernadette Fitch will leave for Vegas on June 30, with the Australian Poker League and 888 Poker League Team, to compete against 2,500 poker players from all over the world for a coveted title bracelet and at least $600,000 in cash.

The couple, who own a convenience store, share a love of poker, which they play at various tournaments across the Gold Coast.

Bernadette scored her spot in the team through an event at South Tweed in May.

After his wife qualified, Timothy decided to buy a Team World Series of Poker package to have a crack at the big time.

“We are both overwhelmed and excited to be going to Vegas,” Bernadette said.

When asked what they would do if they won big, Bernadette said she would clear their mortgage, help her daughters pay off their university expenses, and after that, travel and play more poker.

The $1,500 buy in No Limit Hold ‘Em begins on July 1, at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Last year’s winner, Loni Harwood of the USA, topped 2,541 competitors to walk away $609,017.
