I Love Frida (The Many Faces of Frida)
Tugun artist Beverley Cosgrove is exhibiting her latest work – I Love Frida (the many faces of Frida) – at Kirra Hill Community Centre Gallery, 1 Garrick Street, Coolangatta from 27 September to 8 October.
“Few artists have inspired me in the same way as Frida Kahlo,” says Beverley.
“Her work has been described as naïve folk art, but Frida’s paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy.
“This year’s exhibition is another creative interpretation of photos of Frida Kahlo. In 2019 the work was a riot of colour. This time, the portraits are more understated, using graphite pencils. I hope she would have approved.”
Born in Mexico in 1907, Kahlo died in 1954 after many years of ill health, but despite her trials and tribulations, she remains a revered artist.
