National Organisation, Nia Australia is hosting their annual National Playshop on Sunday 25th August inviting people of all ages and fitness levels to come together to dance for better health.

This three-hour event is called Music, Movement and Magic and is being hosted in nine locations across Australia.

Nia is an expressive movement practice for your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. A classic Nia class is a barefoot, sensory-based, cardio movement class set to music.

An acronym for Neuromuscular Integrative Action, Nia is based on the belief that there is a dancer, martial artist, and highly aware person within each of us. It is a fusion of the martial arts, the healing arts, and the dance arts. Perhaps most importantly, Nia is fun!

In today’s busy disconnected world, connection through movement especially in a way that is fun, playful and energising is needed more than ever.

Dawnie, one of our students recently shared this on our socials, “My flexibility is getting back to normal and my blood pressure is nearly back to a healthy reading. I’m amazed at how great I feel whilst enjoying every minute of the classes I attend. I highly recommend it to anyone who is feeling sluggish, unhealthy or even if you’re plain just lazy. Get off the couch and try Nia.”

Another student Jaquie shared, “I was a little inhibited at first and did a version of a disco bop kind of thing, in the corner, making eye contact with no-one else. Twelve weeks later, attending Nia classes twice a week, I’m out there shaking my booty and having a ball, I can feel myself smiling as my mind, body and spirit are liberated. I’m a big girl and I shake every single bit of “me” and love it. I feel great.”

Some of the many benefits of Nia include cardiovascular health, alleviation of stress and anxiety, hormonal stability and an increase in well-being, leaving you feeling energised, alive, mentally clear and emotionally balanced.

The practice draws on the chemistry of nine movement forms: Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Jazz, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance, Yoga, the Alexander Technique and the work of Moshe Feldenkrais®.

Nia Australia is a not-for-profit volunteer run organisation with over 70 teachers nationwide.
