Gold Coast family business back-pays workers $56K

Two Gold Coast workers are being back paid a collective $56,000 after a Gold Coast family business withheld their entitlements.

The business, which has not been named by the Ombudsman, allegedly sacked the two employees without paying them their annual leave entitlements for nine years’ of service, or wages in lieu of notice.

The Fair Work Ombudsman intervened and worked with the business to establish a repayment plan with monthly instalments to ensure the workers received their entitled pay.

The incident has prompted Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James to urge employers to undertake their own checks of Award provisions and periodically ensure their compliance.

“Our online tools and resources can assist employers to determine their applicable Modern Award, as well as classification and pay rates, including base pay rates, allowances, overtime, penalty rates and entitlements.

She urged businesses to visit the Fair Work Ombudsman’s How We Help You online section which provides templates, fact sheets, tools and guides on various topics such as best practice and ending employment.
