Gold Coast family waits as Indian driver’s extradition is delayed

An Indian national who hit and killed a Gold Coast man remains behind bars in New Delhi.

Puneet Puneet fled Australia while waiting for sentencing back in 2009 after admitting to culpable driving concerning the incident, which happened a year prior in Melbourne.

Dean Hofstee died at the scene, while his friend was badly injured.

After being tracked down late last year, Puneet has been in custody, awaiting extradition to Australia.

NineMSN reports, a New Delhi court adjourned the extradition case until February 6 “due to absence of some senior members of the counsel”.

Puneet’s lawyer has previously told the court, he wanted the trial to continue in India because of the “hatred towards Indian students in Australia”.

Prosecutors say the Indian government has already agreed to extradition and the court just needed to submit a report to the government for the process to go ahead.

Puneet is reportedly being held in Delhi’s Tihar jail.
