Gold Coast gym making a difference with Cycle for a Cure

This month, Gold Coast cycling enthusiasts will hit the cycle studio at Southport Sharks Health + Fitness in support of the one in two Queenslanders who are diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

Cycle for a Cure will be held during National Skin Cancer Action Week on Saturday, November 26, from 7.30am to raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland’s work in research, education, prevention and support services. The 90 minute cycle marathon is part of Southport Sharks Health + Fitness’ month-long Wellness Month health initiative.

Lisa Vegter, Fitness Coordinator – Membership Services at Southport Sharks Health + Fitness, extended an invite to the Gold Coast community to attend Cycle for a Cure. “This November, we are highlighting wellness at Southport Sharks Health + Fitness through a number of workshops and special events,” Ms Vegter said.

“Living on the Gold Coast, there is plenty of sunshine most days of the year to be enjoyed, making skin care an important aspect of our daily routines. Cycle for a Cure provides the opportunity for our fitness community to join together during National Skin Cancer Action Week and raise vital funds and awareness for Cancer Council Queensland. With around 490 people diagnosed with melanoma each year in the Gold Coast region alone, it is an important cause to support.”

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said Cycle for a Cure gave fitness enthusiasts an opportunity to get active and raise funds for Queenslanders affected by cancer.

“Not only will you be supporting the 26,000 Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer each year – you’ll boost your own health by getting active,” Ms Clift said. “We know that at least one third of all cancer cases are preventable through lifestyle changes – including maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, being SunSmart, limiting alcohol and being active.”

Tickets are $20 for Southport Sharks Health + Fitness members and $25 for guests. A fundraising raffle will also take place throughout November, with prizes including a two-night stay at Hilton Surfers Paradise, two Village Theme Parks VIP passes, $100 Cabana Bar & Lounge voucher, $60 Lorna Jane voucher and a double Gold Class pass to Event Cinemas.

To register for Cycle for a Cure, or purchase raffle tickets, call Southport Sharks Health + Fitness on (07) 5591 5800 or visit the centre’s reception.
