Gold Coast holds states largest citizenship ceremony

THOUSANDS of Gold Coasters from 70 different nations descended on the Southport Broadwater Parklands in the sunshine this morning in what was Queensland’s biggest ever citizenship ceremony.

Mayor Tom Tate conducted the ceremony as up to 1200 new citizens pledged their loyalty to Australia and received their citizenship certificates.

Thousands came together to sing the national anthem and watch the celebrations.

The previous record of 1100 people was set in Brisbane on Australia Day last year.
