Gold Coast hosts surfing’s night of nights

THE Arts Centre Gold Coast has hosted the world’s best surfers for the sport’s night of nights.

Surfers traded boardies and rashies for suits and gowns at last night’s 2014 ASP World Surfing Awards, with a bunch of locals taking home gongs.

Surfline reports, Tweed local Stephanie Gilmore claimed Wave of the Year, with evergreen American Kelly Slater winning the men’s category.

While young Lennox Head star Tyler Wright took home the award for Move of the Year, with John John Florence the men’s winner.

Florence also took home a gong for Heat of the Year, sharing with Slater, Josh Kerr, Alana Blanchard and Coco Ho.

Coolangatta’s Mick Fanning was officially recognized as the 2013 Men’s World Champion, with Slater runner-up, while Carissa Moore (Champion) and Wright (runner-up) were celebrated in the Women’s field.

The night was also the official kick-start to the 2014 ASP World Championship Tour, with the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro starting on Saturday at Snapper Rocks.

“I’m more excited than ever to start this new year,” Fanning said.
