Gold Coast kayaker forced to abort solo quest to NZ

UPDATE: GOLD COAST kayaker Stuart Cleary has reportedly been rescued off the NSW mid-north coast this afternoon.

It is understood the 53-year-old activated the emergency distress beacon shortly after 2pm AEDT.

The ABC reports Cleary is in good condition and will be transported by water police to Coffs Harbour this evening.


It comes after he was forced to abort his solo quest to New Zealand after developing steering problems.

EARLIER: GOLD COAST father of two, Stuart Cleary who was attempting to become the first person to paddle from Australia to New Zealand solo has been forced to turn around.

ABC journalist Tom Forbes reported that the 53-year-old was forced to abort after his homemade kayak developed steering problems less than a day into the quest.

The trip was originally expected to take about 60 days.
