UPDATE at 4.25 PM | THE widow of Gold Coast Ironman legend Dean Mercer says he’ll be remembered most for being a great dad.
The father of four was laid to rest in a moving ceremony at Carrara today after suffering a fatal heart attack behind the wheel of his car at Mermaid Waters on Monday, 28 August. He was just 47.
More than 1000 people filled the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre to farewell the two-time Australian ironman champion.

Speaking at the touching service, Reen Mercer said her late husband’s four sons – Brayden, Rory, Lachlan and Joshua – were his greatest achievement.
“He gave me four beautiful, amazing, kind boys … I’m so grateful to you,” she said.
“The thing I’ll miss the most about you will be the look on their faces when dad comes home. He worshipped his sons and they idolised their dad.”

The father of four suffered a heart attack while driving near the Q-Supercentre in Mermaid Waters just before 7am on Monday 28 August.
He crashed his car into a fence on Markeri Street and was rushed by Ambulance to Gold Coast University Hospital, but died a short time later.
The 47-year-old’s family released a statement, saying the loving husband and devoted father “will be remembered as the little bloke with the heart of Phar Lap”.
His memorial is expected to attract 2,000 friends, family and members of the surf lifesaving community.
