AN Ashmore man has been accused of assaulting a highway patrol officer following a high-speed chase south of the border this morning.
The 47-year-old Gold Coast man was allegedly detected driving a Nissan Pathfinder at 130km/h in a 100km zone at Banora Point around 6:40am.
Police initiated a high-speed pursuit of the vehicle after the driver failed to stop when instructed to do so.

Eventually stopping, the driver got out of his car and approached the police officer when a struggle ensued and the officer was allegedly assaulted.
It’s believed a passerby helped the officer to overpower the culprit before he was arrested and taken into custody.
The police officer was treated for minor injuries at Tweed Hospital.
