Bail denied for man accused of Gold Coast one punch attack

UPDATE @ 10.00AM | A MAN charged over an alleged one punch attack in Surfers Paradise has been denied bail.

Amerika Robert Uili fronted Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday morning, a matter of hours after the alleged attack on Orchid Avenue which left another man fighting for life.

The 19-year-old, believed to be from Victoria, is charged with grievous bodily harm and common assault.


The 34-year-old victim remains in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at the Gold Coast University Hospital after suffering serious head injuries in the incident around 1.30am.

Uili is accused of striking him, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground.

Queensland Ambulance Service Senior Operations Supervisor Jayney Shearman said he sustained a traumatic injury.

“He has suffered a significant injury to his head. The area of the skull has actually stayed intact but the injury has occurred within the brain itself,” Ms Shearman said.

“If he hadn’t been managed on scene there was a high potential that he could have died.”

Police are still investigating the incident.

EARLIER @ 5.00AM | A SOUTHPORT man is fighting for life in hospital after he was allegedly punched in the middle of Surfers Paradise this morning.

Police were called to Orchid Avenue in Surfers Paradise around 1.20am on Thursday after reports a 28-year-old man was unconscious.

It’s alleged he was struck by a 19-year-old man before falling backwards and hitting his head on the concrete ground.

The victim was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital with critical head injuries and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit.

The 19-year-old, who is from Victoria, was taken to the  Southport Watchouse.

He has since been charged with grievously bodily harm and common assault.

He will appear at the Southport Magistrates Court later today.
