WHEN it comes to a good catch, Gold Coast’s Dan Sleeman knows his stuff and it appears as though its not only the Bull Sharks calling our waterways home.
The local keen fisherman ventured out in the Nerang River in mid December last year where he reeled in this monster Barrumundi.
“We went for a Mangrove Jack session on a full moon and didn’t expect much, it was pretty windy as well,” he said.
“I was throwing a few surface lures around when boom, this big girl jumps on, ridiculous isn’t it?!”
“The surface hit was like someone throwing a wheelie bin into the water.”
Sleeman said the mother fish jumped out of the water a few times as it was reeled in but he never realised how big it was until it was next to the boat.
“It was around 90cm but it was just stupid fat, tall and heavy.”
“I don’t know a lot about weights of fish but couldn’t hold it up without resting it on my leg or cradling my arms under it!”
He says he hasn’t caught anything as big or as fat as this catch since and blames his ‘lucky red hat’.
“I tell you what though, I retired my lucky red hat about a month ago and I’ve hardly caught a thing since.”
“I’ve been out in the boat like seven times for hardly anything. It must be the hat.”
After a quick few happy snaps, Sleeman released the beast back into the Nerang River.
