Gold Coast man tragically drowns in mate’s backyard swimming pool

A MAN has tragically drowned and a toddler is fighting for life in hospital following two separate incidents involving backyard swimming pools on the Gold Coast.

The first tragedy unfolded at a house on Oxley Drive at Paradise Point on Saturday afternoon.

It’s understood a 42-year-old Runaway Bay man had been attending a party at the address when he drowned while swimming in the backyard pool.

Emergency services were called to the house, which belongs to a friend of the victim, just before 3pm.

But despite the best efforts of paramedics, the 42-year-old man could not be saved.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious and are preparing a report for the Coroner.

Meanwhile, a toddler almost drowned in a backyard pool in a separate incident at Nerang a few hours later.

Emergency services were called to the Hoban Court home around 5.45pm.

Paramedics worked to keep the young girl alive at the scene before rushing her to hospital.

She was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.
