Gold Coast Mayor appeals to streaming services to film down under

The Gold Coast could be set to get some more movie and TV productions our way, as part of a new plan put in place by the Mayor.

Tom Tate says he’s willing to throw big money at the big streaming services, to try and entice them to film here on the Gold Coast.

It comes as the movie and TV industry grinds to a halt around the world, due to the coronavirus crisis.

But here in Queensland, and particularly on the Gold Coast, productions are now able to go ahead again.

It’s understood the filming of The Bureau of Magical Things resumed last month on the Gold Coast, injecting around $8.5 million into the Queensland economy.

While, the Queensland Premier confirmed in June that the filming of the highly anticipated Elvis biopic will resume as soon as possible.

Today, Newscorp reports that Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has reached out to the heads of Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney, in an attempt to lure more major productions our way.

He’s even admitted he’s prepared to lead a public-private partnership to build another studio here if necessary.
