Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate indicates he hopes to serve third term in city’s top job

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has revealed he has his eye on a third term as Mayor of the city.

The Mayor gave a strong indication that he may run for the 2020 Council elections whilst responding to media after Thursday’s City Budget Council meeting.

“Every year is an election year budget and so is next year,” Mayor Tate said.

The Mayor confirmed he and his wife Ruth had been talking about the possibility of running for the top job again whilst away on holidays.

“I love the city, I love what I do and Ruth said ‘I fully support the idea of going again for the third term’,” he said.

“So this morning I thought I may as well let the people of the Gold Coast know i’m in it for the long term.

“I want to deliver the infrastructure industry report and be there for fruition such as the light rail stage 3A.”

Mayor Tate said it all comes down to the health of him and his family.

“We’ve been blessed,” he said. “Ruth has come through really well, and from my point of view all the cutout of my bowel cancer has been benign so i’ve been blessed there.”

“If both our health’s stand up, we love what we’re doing, and we’ll put up our hand to serve the City one more time.”

If successful, it would be his third successive term as Mayor.

The elections are due in March 2020.
