Gold Coast Mayor urges Premiers to “pick the phone up” over border bickering

The Gold Coast Mayor is pleading for the Premiers of Queensland and New South Wales to stop their bickering over the borders.

Annastacia Palaszczuk and Gladys Berejiklian have been having out a tiff in the media, despite making next to no direct contact with each other.

It follows claims that Queensland could reopen its borders to the whole of Victoria, before letting in those from the Greater Sydney area.

Yesterday, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she was ‘mortified’ by that notion, and that it would be ‘cruel, unjustified and spiteful’ if it went ahead.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk maintains that she hasn’t heard anything from Gladys Berejiklian, and has only engaged with her counterpart with a brief text regarding State of Origin.

Meantime, the tourism industry on the Gold Coast remains in limbo, unsure of whether Sydneysiders or Victorians will be able to book getaways for the Christmas holidays.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has told 1029 Hot Tomato’s Galey, Emily Jade and Christo they need to come together and work it out already.

“The commentary between New South Wales and Queensland Premiers, it saddens me a bit, the politics there – everyone can see that.

“All I can say is pick the phone up, talk to the other person, that’s how we do it.

“To consider that Victorians can come up here instead of Sydney, I haven’t got the scientific facts, that wasn’t sent to me, normally I get that,” Mayor Tate said.
